At Egedeniz Regenerative Organic Cotton Project, our goal isn’t just to produce cotton; it’s to restore the ecosystem, conserve vital resources, and achieve the rigorous standards of growing regenerative organic cotton

This process involves conscious, knowledge-based efforts that stand in stark contrast to conventional methods. As we approach our handpicking harvest this month with the Egedeniz team, let’s explore the core regenerative techniques that are shaping our successful first year.

💧 Water Wisdom: Drip Irrigation and Climate-Resilience

One of the most immediate and impactful shifts we made was prioritizing water conservation, a cornerstone of regenerative agriculture.

Drip Irrigation: This method delivers water precisely where the plant needs it, saving significant volume.

Forcing Root Resilience: To build climate-resilient plants, we deliberately cut our irrigation early. This isn’t done suddenly; we gradually weaned the plants off the water supply (e.g., dropping from five hours to two hours per week). This slight, intentional stress forces the cotton to develop deeper, stronger root systems, preparing them to thrive in increasingly variable climate conditions.

Data-Driven Decisions: Our water usage is managed by combining traditional tools (like the pan evaporimeter) with digital decision based on the data we will get from the cotton and crop’s samples support, allowing us to calculate the exact, minimum amount of water needed to transition the plants safely.

🌱 Biodiversity and the Weed Warrior Strategy

In conventional systems, the environment is simplified to maximize the monocrop. We’re doing the opposite: we’re embracing biodiversity as a tool for ecological health and natural pest control.

Multi-Species Planting: To boost our soil’s ecosystem and attract beneficial insects, we began with a five different cover crops types. This complex mix strengthens the soil microbiome.

Weeds as Trap Crops: We allow diverse plant species—often dismissed as “weeds”—to grow alongside our cotton. These serve as a trap crop, drawing destructive insects like the red spider away from the cash crop. The visual of tall grasses is a sign that our natural defenses are working, eliminating the need for toxic insecticides.

Restoring Natural Cycles: This commitment to diversity and letting nature manage itself helps us achieve carbon sequestration and restore the natural balance of the soil—a living environment that can feed the crop using the nutrients slowly released by our applied compost.

At Egedeniz Textile, sustainable farming practices are at the heart of our ESG commitments. In recent weeks, we were honored to host a critical field visit within the framework of the Organic Cotton Accelerator (OCA) Capacity Building Program. The purpose of the visit was to share best practices in regenerative organic cotton production directly with leading industry players on-site.

On-Site Inspection of Regenerative Practices

As a vital step in the agronomy training and seasonal field visits series, our participants had the opportunity to closely examine the innovative techniques applied in our regenerative organic cotton fields at the International Agricultural Research and Training Center (UTAEM). Guided by the expertise of Ms. Ülfet Erdal from UTAEM, participants received detailed information on practices that enhance soil health, support biodiversity, and strengthen climate resilience.

These collaborations not only strengthen Egedeniz’s projects but also bolster our efforts to raise the standards of regenerative organic cotton farming at a national level. The participants’ hands-on experience in the field creates a positive ripple effect by transferring knowledge directly back to the cotton farms.

Why Regenerative Organic Cotton?

Regenerative organic practices go beyond basic organic certification by aiming to increase the soil’s carbon sequestration capacity, optimize water usage, and revitalize the agricultural ecosystem. Our adoption of this approach at Egedeniz is a testament to our commitment to creating a long-term, environmentally conscious, high-quality, and traceable supply chain.

We extend our special thanks to the OCA Turkey team, UTAEM, and all the valuable company representatives who participated in this productive field visit.

Alongside our esteemed partners, the Association of Ecological Agriculture (ETO) and the International Agricultural Research and Training Center (UTAEM), we presented the groundbreaking scientific findings from the first three years of our project, “Development of Regenerative Farming Practices on Cotton Production in the Aegean Region.”

This project is at the forefront of transforming cotton cultivation with regenerative fundamentals. Our regenerative cotton farming practices, including no-till farming, the strategic use of cover crops, and diverse crop rotation, are not just buzzwords; they are fundamental to carbon farming and lead to remarkable improvements in soil health. We’re even utilizing advanced tools like the CO2 Flux tool to measure our impact meticulously.

The Congress provided a wonderful opportunity to connect with highly valuable researchers and farmers from around the globe. It was inspiring to share our achievements and witness the collective commitment to a more sustainable agricultural future. Egedeniz Textile is incredibly proud to be a driving force in bringing awareness to the critical importance of soil health and regeneration within organic cotton production.

Our work is ongoing, and this journey towards sustainable and regenerative cotton is an exciting one. We are committed to sharing further results as our project progresses, demonstrating the power of regenerative agriculture in creating a healthier planet and a more resilient future for farming.

As we recently reflected on Earth Day, the vital role of biodiversity in a healthy planet remains a central tenet of our work at Egedeniz. In our regenerative organic cotton project in Menemen, Izmir, we are actively implementing practices that produce high-quality cotton and significantly enhance our land’s ecological richness. A key aspect of this commitment was recently showcased during our engaging field day, where we demonstrated the power of living mulch and agroforestry to our enthusiastic participants. These methods are fundamental to our approach, fostering a thriving ecosystem within our cotton fields.

☘️The Power of Mulching and Agroforestry for Biodiversity
At Egedeniz, we understand that a diverse ecosystem is a resilient ecosystem. That’s why we integrate practices like mulching, which involves planting beneficial cover crops before cotton planting season. This living green carpet offers numerous advantages: it protects the soil from erosion, conserves precious moisture, naturally suppresses weeds, reduces the need for harmful chemicals, and crucially, it creates a habitat and food source for beneficial insects and soil microorganisms, thereby boosting biodiversity above and below ground.

Complementing mulch is our commitment to agroforestry. Recognizing the interconnectedness of plants and animals, we have strategically integrated trees into our agricultural landscape. As part of this initiative, we have planted 32 different tree seeds across our project area. These trees serve multiple vital functions: they enhance carbon sequestration, improve soil structure and fertility through leaf litter and root systems, provide shade and shelter for various organisms, and create diverse habitats that attract a wider range of wildlife, from birds and pollinators to beneficial predators that help manage pests naturally. This deliberate integration of trees significantly contributes to the overall biodiversity of our farm.

Learning from Our Field Day and Looking Ahead
Our recent field day provided a valuable opportunity to share these biodiversity-enhancing practices firsthand. Participants witnessed the practical application of living mulch and the planning behind our agroforestry system. We were also fortunate to have a seed expert sharing his knowledge on local seed varieties, further emphasizing the importance of genetic diversity in building resilient agricultural systems. Inspired by the positive feedback and recognizing the potential for even greater impact, we are planning to expand our agroforestry efforts. We are currently assessing our needs for additional tree seedlings, guided by our expert’s plan, to further diversify the tree species within our project.

✨Conclusion:
At Egedeniz, we believe that producing exceptional organic cotton goes hand-in-hand with nurturing a thriving and biodiverse environment. Our commitment to practices like living mulch and agroforestry, exemplified by the planting of 32 different tree seeds, demonstrates our dedication to regenerative agriculture. By fostering biodiversity, we are not only improving the health and resilience of our farm but also contributing to a more sustainable future.

Every day is Earth Day!🌎🌱

Read more about our regenerative organic agricultural projects here.

At Egedeniz, we’re deeply committed to fostering a sustainable and thriving agricultural ecosystem. Our regenerative agriculture project, in partnership with UTAEM and ETO, focuses on innovative solutions like windbreaks and agroforestry to improve cotton yields and create a healthier environment.

Why Windbreaks Matter in Regenerative Cotton Farming

A key element of our expanded project is the protective border of trees surrounding our fields. These windbreaks offer numerous benefits:

Erosion Control: Windbreaks act as a natural barrier, significantly reducing wind erosion and preserving precious topsoil. This is vital for soil health and fertility, core principles of regenerative agriculture.

Microclimate Regulation: By reducing wind speed, windbreaks create a more stable and favorable microclimate, leading to improved pollination, reduced water stress, and higher cotton yields.

Water Conservation: Windbreaks minimize evapotranspiration, conserving crucial water resources, which is particularly important in water-scarce regions.

Increased Biodiversity: The trees provide habitats for beneficial insects, birds, and pollinators, increasing biodiversity – a critical component of a resilient ecosystem.

Carbon Sequestration: Trees are natural carbon sinks, absorbing CO2 and mitigating climate change.

Agroforestry: Integrating Trees for a Holistic Approach

We go beyond windbreaks by embracing agroforestry, intentionally integrating trees and shrubs into our cotton farming systems. This holistic approach offers:

Enhanced Soil Health: Tree roots improve soil structure, aeration, and water infiltration, and they also contribute organic matter, enhancing fertility.

Increased Productivity: Agroforestry can increase overall farm productivity by providing additional products like timber, fruit, or fodder alongside cotton.

Economic Diversification: Integrating trees provides farmers with diversified income streams, improving economic resilience.

Looking Ahead: Cultivating a Regenerative Future

Windbreaks and agroforestry are investments in the long-term health of our land, environment, and community. These natural solutions improve cotton yields and foster a sustainable agricultural system.

Thriving Regenerative Wheat: Our first regenerative wheat crop, a pioneering achievement for Türkiye, is nearing harvest! We expect to bring it in within the next few days. We’re planning a farm day event where Egedeniz family members will join our dedicated farmers to celebrate this achievement and learn more about regenerative agriculture practices.

Data & Analysis: We’re excited to analyze this project’s CO2 emissions and soil health elements. This data will be crucial for measuring the impact of our regenerative practices.

Restoring Soil Health: By allowing the soil to rest and regenerate through crop rotation, we aim to increase its organic matter content, leading to long-term fertility and improved crop yields.

Spring has sprung, and we’re excited to share updates from our regenerative agricultural fields with a focus on regenerative and organic agriculture practices in sustainable GMO-Free cotton and hemp farming.

Project 1: Regenerative Organic Cotton Agriculture in the Aegean Region

(Partners: UTAEM, ETO)

We’re in year three of this project, and following our crop rotation schedule, this year we’re giving our cotton field a well-deserved rest. We’ve planted wheat instead, allowing the soil to heal, regenerate, and replenish its nutrients.

Crop rotation is a cornerstone of regenerative agriculture. Cotton is a demanding crop, requiring significant nutrients from the soil. We aim to improve the soil’s physical and chemical properties by planting wheat, ultimately boosting its health.

We’ve also redeployed our CO2 Flux tool to monitor the field’s carbon sequestration and emissions. This data is crucial for understanding how regenerative cotton farming impacts the Aegean region’s soil health and CO2 balance.

Project 2: Regenerative Organic Cotton & Hemp Farm

(Partner: ASTAB)

Continuing our mission in the Aegean region, we planted our GMO-free cotton and hemp seeds side-by-side last month. Regenerative agriculture emphasizes minimizing soil disturbance, so we used a no-till drill machine to precisely sow the seeds at the optimal depth directly into the soil. Preserving the soil’s surface ecology is a critical aspect of this practice.

As a textile supplier, we’re proud to continue these agricultural projects and explore ways to minimize our environmental impact throughout the production chain. We also want to shine a light on the farmers who are the backbone of the sustainable textile industry. After all, sustainable textiles begin with the hands that nurture the crops!

Read more about our regenerative agricultural practices and project details here.

Egedeniz Group’s hemp farm, nestled within 45 km² of our Izmir headquarters, stands as a testament to the remarkable qualities of this plant. As we approach 2024, we are excited to share the journey of Turkish hemp textiles through a one-minute video. This visual storytelling emphasizes hemp’s short life cycle, its positive impact on soil health, and the meticulous processes involved in transforming it into a sustainable textile raw material.

Hemp Textiles Sustainability

Short Life Cycle:
Hemp, with its short life cycle, captivates us with its ability to rapidly grow and mature within months, making it an environmentally efficient choice for sustainable and eco-conscious fashion brands and farmers!

Chemical-Free Cultivation:
Sticking to Egedeniz Group’s sustainability vision, we take pride in cultivating hemp without the need for pesticides and chemicals. This not only ensures a clean and pure textile but also minimizes environmental impact.

Deep Roots and Soil Health:
The deep roots of the hemp plant play a crucial role in enhancing soil health. By increasing soil organic matter, hemp contributes to the overall well-being of the land it grows in.

Water Conservation:
Compared to cotton, hemp has a significantly lower water requirement for growth, making it a sustainable choice that helps conserve precious water resources.

Our Hemp Farm in Izmir, Turkey

Here, regenerative practices take center stage as we grow hemp to harvest fibers improve soil health, and enhance its natural ability to absorb CO2 from atmosphere.

Planting to Harvesting:
In 2023, we planted our hemp seeds in March, and by August, we celebrated the harvest. After carefully leaving the hemp stalks in the field to dry for nearly three weeks, the stage was set for the next crucial steps.

Innovative Processing:
Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond cultivation. Astab Tabacoo Machinery, our esteemed project partner, has developed cutting-edge machinery for separating hemp fibers from the woody parts. This process ensures that we obtain high-quality bast fibers ready for textile production.

Biodegradable Byproducts:
The journey doesn’t end with fibers. Through this process, hemp yields valuable byproducts such as hurd and hemp tow. These biodegradable materials find applications in various industries, including insulation, composites, animal bedding, and construction. We’re delighted to contribute to sustainable design initiatives across diverse sectors. Contact us at info@egedeniztextile.com for getting more info.
