The presence of our “future managers”—the children of Egedeniz team members. Sustainability is a value best learned through experience, and we wanted to give our kids the chance to touch the soil and understand the source of life.

Watching the children water the seeds and carefully place saplings into the ground was a powerful reminder of why we do this work. We are not just planting trees for today; we are building a canopy for the future generations who will inherit this planet.

• Farmer Education and Awareness: Working intensively on the education of local farmers to transition to and master regenerative organic practices and providing them with technical support.
• Direct Connection: Connecting these dedicated farmers directly with fashion brands, establishing a transparent and fair value chain right at the source.

This program went beyond a simple academic exercise, bringing together 30 students from 18 different nationalities to create a vibrant platform for exchanging ideas focused on the challenges and solutions in sustainable fashion.

💡 The Vision of Youth: Fresh Ideas from Diverse Perspectives

Students from Dokuz Eylül University (Türkiye 🇹🇷), Windesheim (Netherlands 🇳🇱), University of Alba Iulia (Romania 🇷🇴), Odisee (Belgium 🇧🇪), Karel de Grote-Hogeschool België (Belgium 🇧🇪), and Fontys University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands 🇳🇱) spent a week working on Egedeniz Textile’s sustainability strategies.

The program included a critical day of site visits and foundational presentations. On Tuesday, October 7th, the students, alongside their mentors, visited Egedeniz Textile for a deep dive into sustainable production. The day featured two key sessions:

1. Regenerative Agriculture: Mrs.Ulfet Erdal from UTAEM (International Agricultural Research and Education Center) presented Egedeniz Textile’s holistic approach, detailing regenerative agriculture practices and showcasing the journey of textiles from farming to final products and garments.
2. Mission and Transparency: Melody Malek, Head of ESG, delivered a presentation on Egedeniz Textile’s core mission and vision, emphasizing the importance of robust collaborations in fostering transparency and traceability within the supply chain.

The students also toured the Egedeniz and Kadeks Textile facilities to gain a firsthand understanding of the different departments and labor required to bring a T-shirt to life.

This immersive experience laid the groundwork for the students’ project: developing future sustainability strategies for Egedeniz. The project culminated in excellent presentations, where the youth shared brilliant ideas focusing on key areas such as transparent brand-supplier collaboration, digitalization, clean energy, farmer education, and circular production. We were greatly inspired by the youth’s innovative thinking.

Focusing on critical issues like the ‘behind the scenes of fashion’ and ‘farmer challenges,’ the teams provided us with visionary recommendations in three key areas:

• Sustainable Supply Chain Management: Addressing the difficulties faced by farmers, proposing concrete ideas to make our organic cotton supply chain more equitable and transparent.
• Circular Economy and Waste Reduction: Presenting the innovative digital platform solutions specifically designed to minimize waste during the production phase and redesign products according to circular fashion principles.
• Consumer Awareness and Transparency: Students demonstrated new ways to communicate our ESG data(Environmental, Social, and Governance) to consumers. Displaying a product’s entire journey transparently was met with great interest by applying digital QR codes, online software, and blockchain technology.

🤝 Collaborative Learning and Interaction: Egedeniz Representatives

At the culmination of the project, the students presented their ideas to our company representatives, Melody Malek(Business Development and ESG) and Selim Pilavcı (Human Resources Manager). The presentations, prepared through the passionate and intercultural collaboration of the students, were highly inspiring for us. Directly experiencing the expectations and innovative thinking of the younger generation is an invaluable step in our company’s sustainability journey.

On-Site Inspection of Regenerative Practices

As a vital step in the agronomy training and seasonal field visits series, our participants had the opportunity to closely examine the innovative techniques applied in our regenerative organic cotton fields at the International Agricultural Research and Training Center (UTAEM). Guided by the expertise of Ms. Ülfet Erdal from UTAEM, participants received detailed information on practices that enhance soil health, support biodiversity, and strengthen climate resilience.

These collaborations not only strengthen Egedeniz’s projects but also bolster our efforts to raise the standards of regenerative organic cotton farming at a national level. The participants’ hands-on experience in the field creates a positive ripple effect by transferring knowledge directly back to the cotton farms.

Regenerative organic practices go beyond basic organic certification by aiming to increase the soil’s carbon sequestration capacity, optimize water usage, and revitalize the agricultural ecosystem. Social workers play a vital role in advocating for workers’ rights, providing support and resources, and promoting safe and healthy working environments. They work closely with garment workers to address issues such as fair wages, safe working conditions, and access to healthcare. Their efforts are crucial in creating a more just and equitable industry.

 As Egedeniz Textile, just as every year, we went to our Annual tree planting event collaborating with the Aegean Forest Foundation and with the union with our beloved partners. Together, we set out to plant 1000 trees, aiming to renew and rejuvenate the lush landscapes of the Aegean region. This effort is more than a simple act of planting trees; it is a powerful step toward our promises to the soil that gives life to everything we produce. 

Aegean Landscapes 

Aegean landscapes, known for their natural beauty and rich history, are now home to a vibrant tapestry of native tree species. Each sapling represents a commitment to restoring the delicate ecological balance of the region. We grow our organic cotton and hemp consciously in this land, and we have to do more! Egedeniz family and its loyal partners are aware of soil health importance and were alongside us in this movement

These trees will: 

• Absorb carbon dioxide and contribute to combatting climate change. 
• Purify the air and improve its quality for the local community. 
• Provide habitats for native wildlife, fostering biodiversity. 
• Strengthen the soil, preventing erosion and supporting agriculture.

This year we met with AIESEC which is a global youth-led organization that fosters peace and fulfillment through intercultural exchange. It provides opportunities for young people to volunteer abroad, gain international experience, and develop leadership skills. AIESEC is active in over 100 countries and territories, offering a wide range of programs and experiences for students and recent graduates.

With this new cooperation we learned more about the World’s Largest Lesson;  a global education initiative that aims to inspire and educate young people about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It involves a series of events and activities held worldwide, with the goal of raising awareness and promoting action towards a more sustainable future.

A Day in the Life of a Sustainable Future Led by Youth, AIESEC in İzmir;

Our journey began early in the morning as we set off to visit various schools across İzmir. Our team was eager to connect with students from different backgrounds and share their passion and vision for sustainability. We had the privilege of witnessing workshops and lessons on SDGs 13, 14, and 15: Climate Action, Life Below Water, and Life on Land.

Unveiling the Challenges and Solutions

In our workshops, we delved into the pressing environmental challenges facing our planet. We discussed the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect our oceans from pollution, and preserve biodiversity.

But we didn’t stop there. We also explored innovative solutions and practical steps that students can take to make a difference. Students were asked to create and envision their dream future for our planet considering their age range & therefore with different methods.

Witnessing Young Minds

The students’ enthusiasm and curiosity were truly heartwarming. The questions and insights were thought-provoking, and dreams for a better future and knowledge about our world’s current situation were inspiring. We were particularly impressed by their creativity and willingness to think outside the box.

While witnessing how youth see the future, we were once more awakened by the idea that the new generation is here to change the world.

From Theory to Action

We believe that education is not just about learning facts; it’s about applying knowledge to create positive change. That’s why we encouraged students to take action, no matter how small. Whether it’s reducing their daily consumption habits, conserving water, or advocating for sustainable practices in their communities starting from their homes and schools, they were more than excited and reminded us that every effort counts. From a kid sitting in their school desks to me writing this blog and to us, the private sector. We are all responsible; for sure private industry has more power to be a part of this commitment.

A Commitment to Partnership

As a proud supporter of SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals – Egedeniz Textile recognizes the importance of collaboration. By working with organizations like AIESEC İzmir and engaging with young people, we can build a more sustainable future together.

We plan to continue our partnership with AIESEC İzmir and explore other opportunities to engage with young people and experience sustainability and ideas with Youth.
