Regenerative Organic Cotton Farming Takes Root in the Aegean Region

Regenerative organic cotton farm day

UTAEM and ETO hosted a Regenerative Farm Day event at our collaborative project site, showcasing regenerative organic practices. The event, held on March 19, 2025, highlighted the transformative power of cover crops in boosting soil health and ecosystem resilience.

Attendees, including agricultural experts, farmers, and NGO representatives, witnessed firsthand the lush fields brimming with diverse cover crop mixtures. These vital plants are set to be mulched, enriching the soil and paving the way for healthier cotton crops.

Key takeaways from the Regenerative Farm Day

  • Soil Health Revolution: Cover crops are a game-changer, enhancing soil organic matter, improving water retention, and fostering robust microbial activity.
  • Biodiversity Boost: These crops provide habitats for beneficial insects and pollinators, reducing the need for harmful chemical inputs.
  • Climate-Smart Agriculture: Cover crops play a crucial role in carbon sequestration, helping mitigate climate change impacts.
  • Windbreak Importance: The event also emphasized the importance of windbreaks in protecting regenerative fields.

The collaborative projects, “Studies on Restoring Agroecosystems for Regenerative Organic Cotton Production in the Aegean Region” and “Development of Regenerative Organic Agriculture Practices in Cotton Production,” are leading the charge in sustainable agriculture. With Egedeniz (EgeDeniz) Textile involved in the private sector part of the projects, the projects are showing great promise.
